The theme of the Conference was the bringing together of scientific, ethical and cultural values, as well as practical realities, in order to make useful recommendations for the preparation of international standards by the OIE. The book contains the unabridged texts of the 24 papers presented by internationally renowned experts, on the following topics: Various perspectives on global animal welfare challenges; Applying science to animal welfare; Areas of practical application; and The way forward. It also contains recommendations from the various working groups, which consisted of experts from the different stakeholder groups, namely the public and private sector, research and education, and nongovernmental organisations.
